A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.

Dengue a viral infection capable of infecting mankind is quite prevalent these days. The cases of dengue are rising on a high despite of every possible effort made from all sides. The situation is problematic requiring apt care and wise actions to be taken to curtail issues. Dengue fever is a self limiting disease but needs intelligent preventive measures to negate any complications or residues in future. Dengue also known as break bone fever is characterised with fever, intense headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle and joint pains, pain in eyes with photophobia (fear of light). Almost all know the disease and its presentation but things become tricky when it comes to the accurate care. Patient and the nearby family should know the fine details to keep the patient and themselves aloof of any hazards. Simply any one caring would never like the patient to get worse or see him / her suffering the same.

The care comprises of few simple steps which when adopted religiously will help:

  • The management of dengue is symptomatic and supportive. Every effort is made to bring the patient at peace and make him / her free of the annoying pains.
  • In the initial phase the patient should be kept isolated under nets to protect.
  • 24 * 7 a mosquito repellent should be kept close to the sufferer.
  • The surroundings should be kept neat, clean and hygienic with no possibilities of any issues / infections what so ever.
  • In instances where the fever is high bed rest is advisable. Never allow the patient to just move around and freshen up rather limit activities and make the rest as comfortable as possible. The room chose for resting should be dark, quiet, and free from noises and any potent distractions.
  • Anti pyretic or sponging are required to keep the fever on the normal side preferably below 40 degree Celsius.
  • Aspirin is to be avoided as this can trigger complications and may support dengue to take a severe form of dengue haemorrhagic fever. Also in cases where the diagnosis may not have been established and one develops fever in a dengue outbreak in the surrounding then too never give aspirin before any conclusion. It may be you are not bringing in peace but adding fuel to the fire within.
  • Regular blood examinations are to be conducted to monitor progress. Never neglect the daily monitoring it is essential.
  • All possible measures are to be taken to keep the patient hydrated. Since the losses are immense with sweating, vomiting and diarrhoea do keep giving the patient some oral rehydration. In severe cases where patient fails to sustain the oral feed; drips may have to be used to combat.
  • All the family members nearby should wear full sleeve and full length clothes for protection.
  • In case someone nearby develops fever then immediate tests and adequate measures should be adopted to keep things under control.

Hope the above tips help every reader and educates enough to take care of a dengue sufferer in the best possible complications free way.
